By Wisdom a House is Built: Introducing Ethical Property Stewardship to Real Estate

Proverbs 24:3-4 invites us to see a home as something entrusted to us, not just a commodity to flip. Here is what stewardship looks like in a sale.

Walk through any real estate marketing campaign and you will notice a pattern: homes are described as assets, inventory, and opportunities. Those words are not wrong, but they are incomplete. For most families, a home is where life happens, where children grow up, and where a lifetime of work is stored in walls and a roof.

The book of Proverbs offers a different lens. "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled" (Proverbs 24:3-4). At West Coast Real Estates Network (WCREN), that passage is more than a motto. It shapes how we think about every transaction we touch.

From owner to steward

Stewardship begins with a simple shift in perspective. An owner asks, "What can I get out of this?" A steward asks, "What have I been entrusted with, and how do I handle it well?" Psalm 24:1 puts it plainly: the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.

For a homeowner, that does not mean giving up the right to sell at a good price. It means making decisions with care, honesty, and accountability, whether you are selling, buying, or advising someone else.

Three marks of ethical stewardship in a sale

What does this look like in practice? Three commitments come up again and again.

  • Honesty about the property. Disclosures are complete, condition is described plainly, and nothing is hidden to win a quick offer.
  • Transparency in the process. Sellers and buyers both understand how the sale works, who is paid, and what happens at each step.
  • Care for the people involved. A sale touches a family, a neighborhood, and sometimes an entire community. Ethical practice remembers that.

Wisdom, understanding, knowledge

Proverbs 24:3-4 names three building materials, and each one has a practical counterpart in real estate.

  1. Wisdom is knowing the right strategy for your goals, not just the popular one.
  2. Understanding is grasping how the market, the contract, and the timeline work together.
  3. Knowledge is having accurate information before you commit to a decision.

When any of the three is missing, homeowners are more likely to make costly mistakes. That is why education is a core part of WCREN's work and why we partner with Lord's Instruments Ministries on housing literacy.

What stewardship is not

It is worth being clear about what we are not saying. Ethical stewardship is not a reason to leave money on the table, and it is not a substitute for professional advice. It does not mean every client shares the same faith, and it does not change the fact that real estate is a business with real financial stakes.

What it does mean is that the business is run with integrity. A seller who wants the strongest possible result and a seller who wants to treat every party fairly are not in conflict. The two goals work together when the process is transparent.

How this shapes the way WCREN works

Our controlled bidding model grows out of these convictions. A defined 21-day window, a confidential reserve set by the seller, and open, verifiable bidding are all designed to make the sale fair to everyone at the table. Buyers see clear rules. Sellers keep control. Nobody is pressured by hidden tactics or artificial urgency.

We also believe that part of stewarding a transaction is giving back to the community around it, which is why housing education and community support are woven into our mission.
