The Fiduciary Duty of Property Stewardship: Lessons from Psalm 24:1

If the earth is the Lord's, then every property is held in trust. Here is what that means for honesty, accountability, and how we sell real estate.

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1). It is one of the most familiar lines in the Psalms, and one of the most challenging when applied to everyday business. If the earth belongs to God, then no one truly owns property in the absolute sense. We hold it, manage it, and eventually pass it on.

That idea has a long name in theology, stewardship, and a similar name in the professional world, fiduciary duty. The two are closer than they first appear.

Owner or manager?

In modern life, ownership suggests a right to do whatever we want. Stewardship suggests something different: a responsibility to care for what has been entrusted to us and to answer for how we handle it.

A fiduciary, in professional terms, is someone legally and ethically bound to act in another person's best interests. Real estate professionals have duties of this kind to their clients. Biblical stewardship widens the circle, asking each of us to act with integrity toward everyone our decisions touch.

What stewardship looks like in a real estate sale

Four practical commitments follow from this view.

  1. Truthfulness. Disclose what needs to be disclosed. Describe the property as it is. Do not hide defects or exaggerate strengths.
  2. Fairness. Treat buyers, sellers, and cooperating professionals with respect. Do not use deceptive tactics to win a negotiation.
  3. Diligence. Do the work carefully. Verify facts, meet deadlines, and follow through on commitments.
  4. Generosity. Look for ways to bless others through the transaction, whether by educating a first-time buyer or supporting a community need.

Stewardship for homeowners

Homeowners are stewards too. That might mean maintaining the property responsibly, making decisions that protect the family's financial wellbeing, and thinking about how the home might serve others in the future. It may mean selling at the right time and in the right way, not in a panic.

It also means seeking wise counsel. Proverbs repeatedly praises those who listen to advice, and few decisions merit careful advice more than the sale or purchase of a home.

Stewardship for professionals

For agents, brokers, lenders, and other advisors, stewardship means remembering that every file represents a family or an organization with real hopes and fears. It means refusing shortcuts that compromise honesty and resisting the pressure to put volume ahead of people.

West Coast Real Estates Network (WCREN) builds its practice around these principles, working under the guidance of Broker Charles Nguyen and in partnership with Lord's Instruments Ministries.

Accountability that is practical

Principles need structures. At WCREN, accountability is supported by:

  • Published rules for every bidding event.
  • Written disclosures and clear documentation.
  • A confidential reserve that respects the seller's authority.
  • Licensed supervision and compliance review.
  • A commitment to give back to the community through housing education and support.

No process is perfect, but visible standards make it easier for everyone to hold the process, and us, to account.

Answering objections

"Is this just marketing?" Fair question. The test is behavior. We invite you to evaluate our disclosures, our process, and our track record, and to hold us to what we say.

"Do I have to share your faith to work with you?" No. We welcome clients of every background. The values shape how we work, not who we serve.

"Does stewardship mean accepting less?" Not at all. Caring for what has been entrusted to you includes pursuing a fair and strong result.

If this perspective resonates with you, we invite you to join a community of homeowners, professionals, and ministry leaders who are thinking seriously about how faith and real estate fit together.
